En-Route to Vakona Forrest Lodge

After an extremely hospitable stay at Le Domaine de Fontenay, we’re in the air again and on our way to our next port of call. However, we couldn’t leave here without having one last mosey around before heading for the airport.

We took a whistle-stop tour of Diego, one of the bigger towns a short distance away from Joffreville. With plenty here to see and do it’s a shame that we didn’t get to spend more time here, but we did manage to visit a few key places, including the war graves of Malagsy allied gunners killed during 1942 whilst taking the town from the Vichey French. The upkeep of this site has been payed for by the British government since it was established, and appears to be well looked after as a result.

Something that I’ve noticed and been quite curious about since we arrived was the sheer abundance of 30 year old Renault’s and Citroens buzzing around, still working fine and in some cases appearing to have just rolled of the production line; apparently, old and non-functional cars are imported into Diego from France, where the local mechanics get working again and resell them to the locals. Almost all of the taxi cabs around here are 30 year old Renault 4’s, proving that just because it’s old, you don’t necessarily throw it out.

Our time in the region over, we parted company with our guides at the airport, where we boarded for the first leg of our trip to Andasibe, just east of the capital.
