Happy New Year… again
29th JanuaryLocation: Wan Chai, Hong KongWeather: 28°C, Cloudy.
It’s about 12:30 now, and we’ve just come back from a bit of a walk around. Thanks to our “early start”, it’s the first time we’ve ever made it out of a hotel by 9AM, and probably the only time when there was no advantage to it being a) Sunday morning and b) Chinese New Year.
Emma had this peculiar desire for a sandwich in the night so we were on a mission to find a cafe. We walked down to Times Square (which despite it’s name, is just a giant indoor shopping mall), and finding nothing open there took the MTR back to Wan Chai. I know we’re here to sample the local cuisine, but all I wanted was coffee and cake, so I was quite pleased when we happened upon a Starbucks (which incidentally was the only thing open for miles at this time of the morning).
After a tall latte and danish, we wandered a bit more - this time down to the docks. There was a lot of work going on for tonight’s New Year festivities, with stages being built and barriers being set-up all across the waterfront, and by the looks of it there’s a huge fireworks display being setup on a barge in the river.
Being “quintessentially British” (i.e. desperate for a cuppa) we visited a local supermarket to pick up some tea and milk - I think the checkout staff there knew as they saw what we were buying, put two and two together and were having a bit of a giggle at our expense.
It didn’t take long for our jet-lag to set in again, and we were back at the hotel after only a couple of hours of exploration. Hopefully we’ll be able to sleep of the rest of it off before heading out catch the fireworks later on…
