One of the most unique wonders of the world; but worth the hassle?

We’ve just arrived at Siem Reap international airport, bound for our last stop on our journey - Bangkok. We’re delayed by about half an hour, so I’m sitting around drinking iced tea while Emma goes off to the gift shop.

You have to hand it to the Cambodian’s - they’ve managed to come through wars, oppression and sheer bloody murder to make Angkor an extremely popular and tourist friendly destination, and have had to do so extremely quickly in order to cope with the mass influx of people.

Unfortunately, I leave here with a slightly bitter taste in my mouth. We came here for the temples and archeological sites, and I don’t think we were at all disappointed by what we saw. There is something about the Angkor temples that you just can’t explain away in text and photographs, and for this reason alone it was worth coming.

However, our temple visits where marred by the sheer amount of bloody tour groups they allow here on day and weekend trips. Bearing in mind that these temples are supposed to be places of worship and therefore tranquil, I personally found it very hard to get a real impression of them with about five or six bus-loads of people barging their way past.

There are many things about Siem Reap itself that don’t sit well with me at all. This trip was something that Emma had been planning for almost as long as I’d known her (actually, probably longer). As our time here fell during Valentine’s Day the idea was to make it a really fantastic experience, so we booked the Shinta Mani - one of the more expensive boutique hotels here.

Now, hotels here are expensive - way over what you would expect to pay in this part of the world, and approaching the price you would expect for premium quality in Europe or the US; for that kind of money, you’d think that you would get something rather special. What we got was adequate. Sure, the actual room was ok but the supplies were rarely replenished, and the staff made far too many visits to our room during the day (which started to get suspicious after a while).

Finally (and I think for me ultimately) I think I need to offer a bit of a warning to anyone reading this who wants to come here - don’t buy jewellery at any of the shops here. It’s of extremely poor quality, the stones are fake and will almost guarantee to cause your loved one disappointment when it falls apart only days after purchase.
