Out of Provence and into the mountains…
8th JulyLocation: SeezWeather: 14°C, Sunny.
After almost a full day of driving, we’ve arrived at our overnight rest-stop at Seez. It’s been day of continuous visual amazement as we headed further into the Alps, so we’re looking forward to tomorrow when we’ll, be heading across the border into Switzerland.
We hit the road early this morning, loading up on provisions and leaving Fontaine de Vaucluse at around 10am. The familiar, twisting roads of Provence soon gave way to some classic tree-lined highways ands far as the eye could see there were fields of green and farmland all around.
The French Alps, which for a few hours into the journey where on the distant horizon, soon started to fill the windscreen and before I knew it we were faced with one of the most awesome views I have ever seen in this hemisphere.
The drive up into the mountains was probably the most fun we’ve on the road had since we started the trip, with sheer drops following hairpin turns, melting ice and snow on the side of the road and (of course) the most stunning of views facing us on every turn.
With our ears popping and drinks bottles collapsing under the (lack of) pressure, we eventually reached an altitude of 2770 meters, pausing at Col’s d’izoard (where there was a huge pick’n'mix sweet stand!) and de l’Iseran to take in the breathtaking views and snap a few images. What we hadn’t prepared for was the change in temperature; dressed in appropriate attire for strolling around at sea level, we could only really bear a few minutes of the alpine cold in our shorts and t-shirts.
It was getting quite late by the time we started our descent, so rather than waiting until we reached the hotel for dinner, we stopped at Le Soir Diner Aux Chandelles, a roadside restaurant in the middle of nowhere where we ate omelettes whilst listening to to marmots call in the distance.
