We’ve just arrived in Santa Elena, a town neighbouring the Quaker settlement of Monte Verde. It is a popular centre of eco-tourism in Costa Rica, and although difficult to get to without 4x4 due to steep inclines and very rough roads, It’s a thoroughly modern town which at first glance appears to be thoroughly optimised for visitors. There’s plenty to do here, ranging from night hikes to conservation showcases, almost all within a stones throw from wherever you are staying.

We had our wits about us on the road this time, so we didn’t get too lost on our journey south from Bosque De Paz. We had about 120km to traverse to our next port of call, which although not very far under normal circumstances was made far more “interesting” by the terrible roads. Thankful for four wheel drive (and amazed to discover that the faster you drive the less bumpy things seemed) we made it to our next set of digs in about three hours.

As we’re not ones to do things by halves, we booked ourselves into the honeymoon suite of the Arco Iris, a self declared eco-lodge representing the mid-tier of accommodations in the area. Separate, private cabins make up the bulk of the accommodation here, and Initial impressions were not good - the staff at check-in seemed distracted and seemed only willing to do the basics to send us on our way.

When we made to our cabin however, things started to look up significantly - the place was built over three floors and looked extremely new, featuring a full kitchen (including a complimentary bottle of champagne), bathroom with jacuzzi and balcony which had a good view of the surroundings. A television and DVD player were in the bedroom, which is great if you’re sick of jungle trekking and just want to sit around in your room all day.
