“The Peak” of tourist tackiness

We made a beeline to The Peak today, hoping to get a good ariel view of the city. We had originally planned to get the funicular up to the top, but after taking one look at the queue we sensibly decided to forgo that idea and get a nice, air-conditioned taxi there.

I hadn’t read about it in the guidebook yet, but I wasn’t expecting it to be quite as touristy as it was. I was imagining a municipal park-type affair with a car park, a few ice-cream and drinks vendors with a large viewing terrace with a few telescopes overlooking the city. What we found was a large shopping mall selling everything from designer sunglasses to tacky souvenirs. And lots of tourists.

There was a viewing terrace, but unfortunately the vista from it was marred by the new viewing terrace and visitor centre that was being built. I think we stayed all of about 20 minutes before heading back to sea level.

We decided to head back over to Kowloon on the MTR in the afternoon to check out the Hong Kong Space Museum. Unfortunately, this place has obviously seen better days as although from a distance it looks quite modern and hi-tech, inside a lot of the exhibits were broken and showing signs of age.

We did manage to catch a couple of very good documentaries on the Omnimax (IMAX) theatre, one on the Human Body and the other entitled “Kilamanjaro - The Roof of Africa”, which was about six hikers from all over the world climbing to it’s peak… which was an awful lot more impressive than climbing to The Peak…
