You can take a person out of the city…

Our afternoon trek at an end, we finally made it back to the lodge for some dinner and a well earned night’s sleep - or so I thought…

As the previous occupants had finally moved on, we were able to take possession of our accommodation for the night, though despite being forewarned I wasn’t quite prepared for how basic our “bungalow” would be. A 4x3m wooden hut with nothing but a foam mattress the size of the floor and oil-lamp proved a little *too* basic for my comfort, but I figured it was good enough to get some shut-eye before our trip to Joffreville tomorrow. At least that was the plan.

After a simple (but delicious) supper of seasoned fish soup and rice, we attempted to find the shower block and WC. I think we were both shocked that the loo was basically a hole in the ground with a hut around it, crawling with cockroaches, and the shower was a couple of buckets of water. In retrospect, we probably shouldn’t have been quite so surprised - this isn’t exactly mean to be a Hilton and it’s in the middle of the jungle in a poor country.

I went to bed ashamed of my squeamishness and longing for an air conditioner.

Highlights:

Today we: dodged cockroaches in the WC, had a bucket shower, stayed overnight at the Réserve Spéciale de l’Ankàrana lodge.
